Forgotten Fruits Nursery
‘’Growers of Organic Heirloom Fruit Trees”
Congratulations to Rosalie Fisher of Tuakau who won our Forgotten Fruits Pruning Kit for 2014.
Welcome to the 2014 planting season. We are OPEN again and our Fruit Tree Catalogue is out. Enjoy it.
A good productive orchard landscape starts with good planning and the sooner the better as Winter draws on.
The ground gets messier to come and go on. So, if there is any ground prep needing to be done, then it is best done when it's still dry. Also tree varieties are best ordered early so you can be sure to get the varieties you want before they are all sold out.
We often get asked when can trees be planted? Our answer is Winter from early June through to late September. Our fruit trees are lifted from the soil in June when their leaves are off and they're in dormant mode. Any transplanting of deciduous trees is done in this window as well. Our trees are dispatched bare rooted which means the roots are bare. This is fine for the tree. Very much standard practise as long as the roots aren't able to dry out too much. We cover our roots in moist sawdust before we package and send our trees and ask that the trees are either planted as soon as possible into their new position or buried into (heeled in) your garden bed or similar until planting.
Our trees are looking superb this year and have enjoyed a favourable growing season with many nice stories from our customers about their exciting harvests. The fruit flavours from these old varieties are exceptional and cannot be compared to what is available in the supermarkets. You need to experience this.
Look forward to helping you eat from home.
What we are all about...
Forgotten Fruits Nursery is a small family business run by Benji & Laura Woodman with their two daughters
Willow 5 & Olive 4.
Over the past 5 years we have implemented over 60 home orchards ranging from 15-60 trees. Clients who have received the Forgotten Fruits Orchard are able to benefit from our professional support and ongoing maintenance. It is important to us to educate people through the transition of their land into an edible landscape.
We specialise in Apples, Pears, Plums, Peaches & Nectarines with an emphasis on growing hardy varieties for all of New Zealand and our warmer Northland climate. Our main focus is to offer heirloom varieties which have robust disease resistant qualities and supreme old- fashioned taste.
We grow our trees in the ground which starts in early spring, where we plant our raised seedlings and rootstocks into rows depending on the growing time required. The rootstocks are budded in March (Autumn) by us with our collected material. The buds are covered for the dormant season and then the rootstocks are cut back to above the bud in Spring to allow the one variety to grow on for the next growing season. The following Winter when the trees are dormant we lift them from the nursery and grade them and dispatch the orders received and plant them in our orchard landscape projects. Once Spring comes we pot up our remaining trees and sell them during the following Summer.
We wish to thank the many people who have supported us over the years by lending us their precious land, plant material or knowledge.
We are forever grateful.
